The elves are swift and silent killers, and masters of the woods. They know their homeland, Eterce, like the palm of their hand and use this knowledge to destroy their enemies. Though slightly savage, the elves are knowledgeable and kind.
Elves don't associate with the rest of the world much, but lead a very advanced life in their territory. The elves are incredibly protective of their homelands, including, but not limited to their country, Eterce. They are also very wary of the rest of the world, and have ambassadors encompassing the continent, sending back news of worldly events and problems concerning Amaret. Very seldom will another race be allowed to live amongst the woods, for the elves consider them a sacred place for their race. Halflings, if any, are sometimes permitted to live in the woods, provided they don't set up a permanent encampment (which does not bother the halflings, a nomadic race) or destroy the woods in any way.
Elven society is based on a patriarchal system of respect and honor. The elves are incredibly proud and would gladly die to protect their homeland or their dignity. Each elven city is led by the wisest and most powerful shaman, a social class which every elf is underneath (unless they are a part of it). Along with the most powerful shaman, an elder from each of the major families form a council (which can overrule the wise in the interest of the people). In turn, a dignitary from each major elven city controls the smaller villages in its surrounding area, and represents their opinions in the High Council. The High Council is led by the wisest elf, also known as the High Shaman, and contains all of the dignitaries. Elves are incredibly strong-minded and debates on trivial issues have been known to go on for weeks.
The High Shaman is appointed for his wisdom and power. Every ten years, a grand tournament is held in the elven capital city, Shatran. Contests of all kinds go on, and all of the winners are appointed to a position in the court. Winners of the archery contest, for example, would go on to lead the ranged combat section of the elven army, or lead an elite archery team for missions of the highest importance. The most important contest, however, is the one which determines the new High Shaman. Each prospective Shaman is brought to an enclosed area, and asked a single, impossibly difficult riddle. Those that answer correctly proceed to an even harder riddle, and so on, until only one remains. The current High Shaman, Destran, has not lost a competition for 87 years.
Most elves are quiet and reserved, and mostly keep their opinions to themselves. Because of this, they rarely engage in dispute, but many times hold secret grudges their whole lives. This trait translates into military prospects. Elves almost never engage in battle or war without being attacked first, and only to defend themselves. They never seek retribution or power (for the most part), and will not attack an enemy unless he attacks the elf or breaks a moral dogma the elf holds very highly (murder, rape, thievery, etc).
Elves build alongside the earth, not using it. Many elf buildings are almost impossible to discern from the earth itself for the average person. In ancient invasions, entire elf cities have been passed by because none of the enemy troops saw it.
The elves are currently on very good terms with the dwarves, who are also very astute and polite. They trade and interact with the humans, and some elves even live amongst human lands, but for the most part they disagree with the humans' ways and attempt to avoid any association. The elves are on the cusp of war with the vand, whose contempt for nature strikes the very center of an elf's moral being, and are very close to siding with Aficcin against them.
